On 03 September 1853, a sudden snowstorm hit Somerset East, Graaff-Reinet, and Burgersdorp in the Eastern Cape. Many lives were lost as people froze to death. In a chilling twist of steely irony, the South African Commercial Advertiser reported the following: “We may anticipate a continuance of the delightfully cold bracing weather which has set in after the rain.”
